Moving house is a daunting exercise as it is, but when you add the coronavirus to the mix, things get a lot more complicated. With infections expected to rise with the onset of winter, it’s important to remain as cautious as when the pandemic first started.
While it’s a bit risky to move out these days, some people may be forced by circumstances to do so. A lease that’s expiring soon, new occupants moving into your old house, or a new job that awaits. All are reasons that oblige you to move house as soon as possible.
Here are a few tips you can follow to make sure you keep yourself as safe as possible:
Call your mover and inquire about their safety protocols
In many cities and states across the country, only “essential” businesses have been allowed to operate. Thankfully, moving services are one of them and many companies continue to operate during the pandemic. If you decide to hire their services, give them a call to inquire about the safety measures they have in place to protect everyone involved in the process, and what you can do to make the process safer.
Minimize contact with other people
If you aren’t too pressed for time, you may want to consider moving on your own. It is possible to do this over a set period of time. This minimizes the interaction you have with other people. If you don’t have the luxury of time and need the help of professional movers, it’s important to practice social distancing while they are in your house.
Buy new packaging supplies
Don’t scrimp on boxes and packaging supplies. Buy everything brand new. While you may have to disinfect your new boxes, they pose less of a risk than the boxes you can get from grocery stores, which have been handed multiple times by wholesalers, delivery boys, grocery store clerks, and the like. Don’t forget that viruses remain on surfaces for as long as 24 hours, or even more.
Make sure you are in good health
Before the pandemic, it was easy to shrug off a cold or a fever and push on with whatever was on the to-do list for the day. While that may have been possible once, today you should seriously consider postponing your move if you’re feeling under the weather. This is essential for you and everybody else who may be involved in the moving process.
Provide sanitizing products for your movers
If your movers aren’t in full personal protective gear, provide them with products they can use as they move your stuff to the truck. Make sure there’s a hand sanitizer close to the door of your home or somewhere nearer their vehicle. Provide a fresh bar of soap on a sink convenient to them, along with paper towels to dry their hands and a trash can with a lid for used towels. Ask your movers if they have sanitizing supplies with them while they transport stuff to your new home, which should have a similar set of provisions, as well.
