Selling a Home Where Pets Lived

Pets are Living Together

Let’s face it: not everyone is fond of animals. This might pose a challenge, especially when it’s time for you to sell your home. Some buyers may even attempt to low-ball their offers, knowing that you have pets as home companions.

While the situation can become quite prickly with the negative connotation attached to a pet-lived home, there are ways to still get a great deal when making that home sale.

The advantage of virtual tours

With the ongoing global pandemic threatening our safety, open houses are still not being recommended in the real estate industry. The way to go these days in many states including Colorado is home selling via virtual tours. In this light, pet owners who are eager to sell their home have more chances of getting juicy offers by simply putting their pets away from where the camera is pointing.

But just because your pets aren’t seen on-camera doesn’t mean that buyers won’t find out that you have a fur-baby hidden somewhere. Here’s what to do:

  • Temporary relocation. It will only be for the time that the virtual tour is taking place. Here’s where to take your beloved pet:
    • Pet spa. Whether it’s the full treatment or some nail-trimming, your pet will appreciate it – especially after months of probably being subjected to DIY grooming or just letting everything grow out.
    • A relative’s or friend’s place. Make sure to follow proper social distancing and safety etiquette when you drop off and come back for your pet. Don’t forget to bring along some pet supplies like food and a favorite toy.
    • Drive them around the neighborhood or take them out for a walk while the virtual tour is taking place. Dogs may find this enjoyable but most cats will be mortified by the idea. So, for your feline companion…
    • Board them in a kennel. Your cat probably still won’t enjoy this but it beats being moved around too much. Before you do so, however, make sure to research for reliable kennels in your area with 24-hour professional pet caregivers. You can ask around from fellow pet-loving neighbors for recommendations.
  • Keeping the pet at home – but with conditions. Of course, pets are family and they deserve to stay home, even with a virtual tour going on! However, it is still best to keep them away from view. If you have a discreet place at home where they can be placed for the time being (the garage, an outdoor pet home in the backyard, etc.), then keep them there. Make sure they have proper ventilation, food, water, and toys to keep them busy and comfy.

Removing all tell-tale signs of pets at home

Even if your pet is away from a potential buyer’s view, one can still easily spot an animal’s existence in your living space, especially if you leave their food bowls, toys, and other pet stuff all over the place. Also keep these in storage, together with your personal items.

Also, even if potential buyers don’t have the ability to smell and see tiny details, still make sure to rid your living space of any pet leavings from food particles to excreta and shed fur. You don’t want your buyer pulling away when they start smelling something funny as you’re about to close the deal on your home.
