The highways and byways between Colorado and New Mexico are dotted with memorable sights and natural wonders that make an interstate road trip an adventure. For something completely different, however, hop aboard Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the top scenic train ride in the US.
Chugging along at 12 miles per hour on a coal-fired locomotive winding through majestic mountains, lovely meadows, and lush Aspen groves may be just what you need.
History on tracks
The Cumbres & Toltec is a National Historic Landmark. Little has changed since it was built in 1880, allowing passengers today an authentic railroad experience harkening back to the time when Old West deputy marshals and gunslingers were commonplace. Other than its place in history, the Cumbres & Toltec has also starred in dozens of films, including “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “Wyatt Earp.”
Scenic views
In every 64-mile day trip, the Cumbres & Toltec takes its passengers on a scenic journey that starts at the Chama, New Mexico station. The train chugs through breathtaking plains, mountainous terrain with views of the remnants of the historic Lobato sheep ranch, and onto Cumbres Pass, which, at an elevation of 10,015 feet, treats passengers to cool mountain breezes and the sight of alpine meadows sprinkled with vivid wildflowers. Other notable scenic points along the way are Tanglefoot Curve, Cascade Creek Trestle, and Toltec George. Whether you’re departing from Chama, New Mexico or Antonito, Colorado, the beauty of the route remains just as awesome.
From lounge-style seating to an open-air gondola
When booking a ticket, you have three options: parlor car, deluxe car, or coach. Parlor cars, which are exclusive to adults 21 years or older, have a Victorian-era vibe with its lounge-style seating and panoramic windows. Personal attendants also ensure that passengers have everything they need from fresh coffee to delicious confections. Guests in the deluxe car get to enjoy more legroom and café-type seating. Finally, those in coach have cushioned benches and windows that can be opened – an ideal option for families. All ticketed passengers, however, have access to the train’s open air gondola where you can whip out your phone and capture nature at its finest.
Special excursions
At certain times of the year, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad offers Special Trains and events. A Fourth of July Dinner Train allows passengers to watch the fireworks from the train while a DJ plays the hits. There’s also a Sunset Dinner Train where passengers come in costumes, eat dinner, and enjoy live entertainment.
