History of Boulder, CO

Much of Colorado was inhabited by Native Americans until the Colorado Gold Rush swept this area in the 19th century. Miners and prospectors came in droves, seeking gold in the mountains. By 1858, they established a settlement along what is now known as Settler’s Park. One pioneer named A.A. Brookfield formed the Boulder City Town Company in 1859 and from there, the settlement grew.

In its early years, Boulder was still part of Nebraska. By 1861, the Territory of Colorado was established; six years later, Boulder was designated the county seat. Miners also started moving into the area, which led to the development of boarding houses, hardware supply stores, drinking establishments, and many more.

After Boulder’s incorporation in 1871, a number of residential areas began to pop up. The first bank in Boulder opened in 1874. The University of Colorado followed suit in 1877. A year later, Boulder was connected to the power grid.
